Beasts For While is the first full-length vinyl effort from The Collection of the Late Howell Bend, featuring Krysten Davis, Chantelle Dorsey and Irene Moon.

The origins of The Collection of the Late Howell Bend as a musical entity extend back to 1998, when the project was brought about in order to facilitate musical accompaniments for Moon’s Auk Theatre. In the time since its conception, The Collection has moved away from a mere supportive role, into an ensemble which produces music for its own ends. With more than ten members now currently active in the context of The Collection (although Moon remains the only individual present during all Collection recordings and performances), the line-up featured on OWN-11 is responsible for much of the recent development of the group and for many of the live actions of the past several years.

Irene Moon.

It was during her time in Tallahassee, Florida that Moon came to associate with Dorsey and Davis. As such, the musical collaboration which makes up this record remains closely tied to the friendships shared between the three women:

“I was spending time with Krysten and she was helping me through a particularly blue epoch in my life. I deal with these things through music and she just felt the part with an excellent singing voice and raw enthusiasm. It was through Krysten I met Chantelle who is a natural pianist and had a naturally easy going style. Both were dedicated to the idea and the project and we gelled easily over wine, good song, and all the mysteries of being ladies.”

Moon subsequently considers the record thematically related to the location and time during which Beasts For While was developed:

“The record is very much about the undergrowth and moist things found under rocks. A reflection spell and a bit of a laugh about the mediocrity of life and how incredibly boring it all is.

It’s very much about the pacing of the songs themselves. The chemistry between performers. All the tracks were recorded in one take. [The record is] something you can melt into and bond with, move into our zone. It’s not western, it’s not eastern, not subconscious, only our consciousness. This is the pace of the undergrowth in the heat of summer in the deep south. Dream inducing, enchanting and a little dangerous. Most of the activity occurs in the cool, moist places.

"Ruby in the Dust" also is in homage to Neil Young who inspired the song.”

Davis/Dorsey/Moon, 2009.

Beasts For While serves as the definitive document of Moon’s collaboration with Davis and Dorsey in Tallahassee, Florida, the results of which are undeniably unique to the trio, yet amazingly cohesive and attractive.
